Catching fire summary

The tributes are interviewed on television before they depart for the arena, and President Snow makes Katniss wear a wedding dress. Two out of the three of them are going back to the arena. Plutarch has for years been part of a secret rebel group, and many of the tributes were involved in a plot to bring down the force field around the island so they could escape.

Katniss and Peeta fight over which one is going to die to save the other. Katniss attacks Haymitch, feeling he used her and Peeta. Throughout the rest of the Tour, Katniss and Peeta do everything they can to act madly in love.

Katniss finds out District 8 is in rebellion and in reaction asks Gale and Peeta if they will run away with her. The only thing that brings her out is news from Gale, who also happens to be on the aircraft. Katniss and Peeta are immediately taken off stage but not before they see the old man shot and killed.

Cinna goes with her as she is readied, finally, for the arena. Then the Games arrive.

They camp out on the beach and are joined by Beetee, Wiress, and Johanna. She tells Haymitch about the threat and he explains the only way to keep everyone safe is for her and Peeta to marry. Katniss plunges into dark despair. At twelve noon and midnight each day, lightning strikes a tree on the island. The four form a group and head away from the Cornucopia into the dense jungle.

Since the Games, he has been acting very distant and cold toward her, and she feels guilty for the way she treated him. The shock causes the force field to go down and knocks Katniss unconscious.

He thinks the other remaining tributes would move to the beach if they left. By running a highly conductive wire Beetee has from the tree to the ocean, they can electrocute a large area of water and whatever sand is wet. They find out he discovered a force field the Gamemakers used to keep the tributes in the arena.

It was the home district of Rue, the girl Katniss befriended who was ultimately killed during the Games. Their conversation is interrupted, though, when they find Gale being whipped in the town square as punishment for hunting game. The Games are held in an arena which has land strips separated by water.
